Dear Friends of the Running Through Life Blog
I am pleased and honored to announce that I will be running the Twin Cities Marathon to raise funds to help support a non-profit called Global Deaf Muslims, which also goes by GDM. I my fund raising hope is to raise at least $1000 for this very worth while non-profit. As some, if not many may know, I my self am a muslim how ever I am not deaf. This group though I feel is very dear to my heart and I am try to become more involved. With my schedule restraints with school, work and religious beliefs I don't have much time to do much yet my skill as a runner I feel is a great way for my self to start being more involved with out over extending myself.
I would like to speak a bit on why this group has a special place in my heart at this time and always will. Seeing as that all who know me I myself am not deaf. A little while back though I had the opportunity, actually the pleasure, of meeting a young woman who in every way has changed my world for the better. This woman is, deaf that is She has in medical terms, has what is called Auditory Neuropathy. She is a part of this group and she is now one of the biggest parts of my own life. So much that, not only did I come to like her a lot I fell in love with her. Bear in mind the reason I became a Muslim before I met her so religion has very little to do with the love, honor and respect I have for this wonderful young woman. This young woman I noticed when i first met her was the most beautiful in the world and after learning about her I right away fell in love with her. I have loved her ever since I met her and always will. So much that I would do everything humanly possible to insure her well being and safety. She is as much a human being as every one else, just as everyone who is deaf, blind in a wheel chair or as any other thing in their life which to the majority of people is not considered the norm in any of our current societies.
Moving on though. Here in the Muslim community many of the brothers and sisters who are considered to not be part of the norm of Muslim life are not only shunned. They are harassed, both physically and verbally, they are shut in by family members, they are stripped of their human rights. The extent of how each Muslim is treated varies from place to place, but it is never right on a right level and is definitely never proper in Islam to treat these individuals in such a way. They are human beings just as much as every one else and need to be treated as such. With dignity and respect as you would treat any other person.
What Global Deaf Muslims (GDM) does, is helps bring the issues of one of these groups of people to the fore front of the Muslims and non-Muslims sight as a concern to help foster change. In the Muslim communities around the world, people with what are considered "disabilities" it can be the worst for these individuals, then in some other communities. They do this by providing much needed educational services and a community base to Deaf Muslim amongist the local chapters.
Here in Minnesota I will be running for our local chapter. Global Deaf Muslims Twin Cities which can be found www.globaldeafmuslims.org. Like I said previously, my fundraising goal is of $1,000. I do hope to raise more then this number if it is at all. I have set up a Paypal donation account for this event, which is linked to the side bar on the right side of this blog. All funds raised go directly to GDM, I ask that everyone please use the paypal account to help keep every dollar accounted for. Please every penny counts to help reach the goal. If you can only donate a dollar thats fine and my self am eternally great full to everyone who helps bring the joy of helping others to everyone especially to some one such as the woman I love most in my own life.
Thank you for any help that you can offer.
